Wedge Wire Screen Tube Flowing Direction

 

How do you describe the wedge wire screen tube's flow direction and construction types?

When describing wedge wire screen tubes, often mention FOTI, FITO, radial external wire, radial internal wire, and axial internal wire. Some customers feel confused, and we are pleased to make a simple and easy introduction to these parameters.


Flowing Direction-FOTI, FITO

FOTI means flowing direction from outside to inside.

FITO means flowing direction from inside to outside.


Radial External Wedge Wire

Radial external wedge wire means the wedge wire is radial outside the support wire, and the support profile wire is axial. These wedge wire tubes are composed of a surface wedge wire that is spirally wrapped around an axial support profile wire and attached to each other by resistance welding. 

When the flow direction is from outside to inside (FOTI), the flat side of the surface wedge wire is on the outside of the tube. 

When the flow direction is from inside to outside (FITO), the flat side of the surface wedge wire is on the inside of the tube. 

Radial external wedge wire FITO type is also called a reversed wedge wire screen tube.

Radial Internal Wedge Wire

Radial Internal wedge wire means the wedge wire is radial inside the support wire, and the support profile wire is axial. Radial Internal Wedge Wire Type Tube is rolled-formed from flat wedge wire screen panels, which means there are many welding joining points and the inside wedge wire is not continuously spirally wrapped around axial support profile wires. Furthermore, radial internals only have one flow direction, which is FITO (flow in to out).

Axial Internal Wedge Wire

Axial Internal wedge wire means the wedge wire is axially inside the support wire, and the support profile wire is on the outside of the filter element in a radial direction. The smooth surface of the wedge wire or profile wire is on the inside of the filter element, so the filtration direction is from inside to outside. This means that axial internal wedge wire has only one flow direction, FITO (flow in to out), though FOTI (flow out to in) is also possible in exceptional cases. 

For axial internal wedge wire, according to different slot sizes and filter sizes, there are two different types: one type is wedge wire type tube or cylinder that is rolled from flat wedge wire screen panels, which means there are many welding joining points. The other type is the outside support wires, which are continuously spirally wrapped around axial wedge screen wires.

Axial External Wedge Wire

Axial External wedge wire means the wedge wire is axially outside the support wire, and the support profile wire is on the inside of the filter element in a radial direction. The smooth surface of the wedge wire or profile wire is on the outside of the screen filter element, so the filtration direction is usually from outside to inside. But sometimes, the customers require Axial External Wedge Wire and FITO, which means the smooth surface of the screen wedge wire is inside. FOTI is used when there are no special requirements, such as for an axial external wedge wire. Axial External Wedge The wire tube or cylinder is rolled from flat wedge wire screen panels, which means there are many welding points on the inner supporting profile wires.

Center Pipes

The center pipe is a central slotted screen in radial flow reactors. Its outer surface contacts the catalyst layer and is made as a slit screen of triangular wire. This device holds the packing and directs the flow toward the outlet. There are versions for flow going towards the center or outwards the center. The central pipe is installed in the reactor on support elements above the outlet fitting. The flow area of the outer surface of the pipe is calculated to ensure operation within the wide range of flow rates.

Scallops

Scallops form an outer slit screen in radial flow reactors. These devices are located along the inner vessel surface. Scallops are installed inside vertical reactors and distribute or collect the flow. Scallops hold the packing, collect, and direct the flow. The outer surface of the scallop contacts the catalyst. Depending on the project’s requirements, it can be made of V wedge wire or perforated metal. It can be used to move the flow towards the center or outwards the center. Expanding rings are used to mount the scallops in the radial direction during installation. The space between the scallops and the central pipe in the upper part is closed with a blind plate. The flow area of the scallops is calculated to ensure stable operation in a wide range of flow rates.

Reactor Scallops


Support grids

Support grids are devices for catalyst retention in the horizontal plane of the reactor vessel.

The support grid has a prefabricated structure consisting of segments and support beams. The segments are based on triangular v wire slit screens. They are installed on a support ring and connected by various fasteners. Cord or ceramic fiber gaskets are used to seal the gaps and ensure tightness. The design features of the grid are determined according to the given loads from the catalyst layer and the pressure drop.

The outer basket is an outer slit screen in radial flow reactors. It is located along the inner vessel surface. They are usually installed inside vertical reactors and distribute or collect the flow. The outer surface of the basket contacts the catalyst and is usually made of triangular wire. It can be used to move the flow towards the center or outwards the center. Outer baskets consist of segments assembled by fasteners. The space between the baskets and the central pipe in the upper part is closed with a blind plate.
